I have been holding on tightly to these last few days of vacation with the kids. I'm sad it's coming to an end. We've had a good time hunkering down at home. Lots of cooking and game playing. Fort building and movie watching. Playdates and late nights (which in turn yields sleeping in til 8:30!!!)
But I think my most favorite in-house activity occurred the other day when I read the entirety of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe out loud to the kids in three parts.
Something happens a little differently when you read a book aloud (as you all well know). We tend to do this kind of reading mostly at night before bed. But to spend an entire day engrossed in a book (while playing with Legos, eating lunch, in the car on the way to fencing, in a fort, in the car on the way to ice cream) is rather magical. They got so into the characters that even when we weren't reading they were asking lots of questions and making predictions about what was going to happen next.
And, truth be told, it was a nice break from the enormity of those Harry Potter books.
